Still Life

This was an introductory project that allowed students to explore the way the oil paint laid on canvas. For my still life, I chose a candle my grandmother had given me. Oil paint, 2018.

Master Study

Mash-Up

This project required student to choose multiple pieces by well established artists, and combine their characteristics into a single cohesive image. I chose to emulate Francis Bacon, by imitating the aesthetics of multiple portraits found throughout the breadth of his works, and the painting ‘Medicine’ (1901) by Gustav Klimt.  Oil paint, 2018.

Cotton Candy

Shipwreck

For this project, we were tasked with taking an image from another painter, and changing the overall tone of the image by changing the color pallet and/or adding new elements to the painting. I chose to use an image by Caspar David Friedrich called "The Sea of Ice" (1824), and add a portal in the clouds, a surreal element inspired Salvador Dali. Finally, I decided to change the color pallet to be more reminiscent of a pastel color scene, similar to Candy Land. Oil paint, 2018.

Free Choice

In the final painting of the semester, we were able to choose anything we wanted to paint. So, for my fourth piece, I did a self-portrait. I wanted to emulate the dramatic lighting found in Baroque paintings, especially the chiaroscuro of Rembrandt and Caravaggio. The emotion captured in this piece reflected the uncertainty I felt about my future, and most specifically, my plans to switch schools and change my major. Oil paint, 2018.
